How we make money — and how we stay honest.
Last updated: 2026-06-03
The short version: regulation data is free, alerts and the API are paid, affiliate links are labeled, and nothing about how we summarize a city's STR law depends on who pays us.
Advertising
We do not run display-ad networks on regulation pages. Ad networks introduce tracking and slow page loads — neither acceptable on legal-reference content. If this changes, we'll disclose the network here.
Affiliate links
Outbound links to STR-friendly insurance carriers, STR-specialist attorneys, permit-filing services, or compliance software may be affiliate links. We only link to vendors the team has used, verified credentials for, or received vetted referrals on. Affiliate revenue never changes how a city or state is summarized, scored, or recommended.
Editorial integrity of regulation data
Regulation summaries are extracted from primary sources — municipal codes, state statutes, agency rulemaking dockets — and human-reviewed when confidence falls below threshold. Source URLs are linked on every city page (sources index). Nothing on a regulation page is sponsored. We do not accept payment to soften, omit, or favorably characterize any jurisdiction's STR rules.
Premium subscriptions + API
The free tier covers regulation summaries, change history, and basic email alerts. Paid tiers cover priority alerts, larger watchlists, and programmatic API access. Pricing is transparent on the alerts page. Premium features never affect what's published on free pages.
Sister products
strlaws.com is built and operated by the team at The STR Ledger. Soft cross-promotion appears in the footer and on alert-confirmation pages. Regulation content is free; The STR Ledger templates are paid.
Not legal advice
Nothing on strlaws.com is legal advice. Regulation summaries change frequently and can be ambiguous; for a binding interpretation, consult an STR-specialist attorney in the relevant jurisdiction. We surface what the law says — you decide what to do about it.
